Large print is designed at viewing distance
The familiar instruction to supply every image at 300 dpi comes from close-viewed print. It can be appropriate for a small item held in the hand, but it is often the wrong target for a billboard, wall graphic or banner seen from several metres away. The eye cannot resolve the same fine detail at that distance, and building a huge file to an arbitrary close-print value adds data without adding visible quality.
Large-format artwork should begin with final output size and expected viewing distance. A graphic beside a reception desk will be inspected more closely than one mounted high on a facade. The closer application needs more image detail at final size. The distant application can use a lower effective resolution while still appearing sharp from its normal position.
That does not mean resolution is unimportant. It means the target belongs to the application, not to a universal number.
Effective resolution, not the label on the file
An image has a fixed number of pixels. Its effective resolution changes when it is scaled in the layout. Placing an image at twice its original dimensions spreads the same pixels across a larger area, reducing the detail available at output size. Reducing it concentrates those pixels.
This is why the value reported by an image editor can be misleading on its own. The meaningful check happens in the page layout at the scale the printer will output. If the artwork is built at a reduced working scale, the image resolution must be interpreted by the same scale factor.
Logos, lettering and simple shapes are usually best kept as vector artwork. Vectors describe curves mathematically, so they can scale without revealing pixels. Photographs, textures and painted effects remain raster images and need enough source detail for their final use. Converting a low-resolution photograph into a vector container does not create missing detail.
Artificial enlargement can smooth visible pixels, but it cannot recover true texture or focus that the source never captured. A clean, appropriately sized original remains the strongest starting point.
Bleed belongs outside the finished edge
Bleed is extra artwork extending beyond the intended trim line. It gives cutting and finishing a margin so a slight variation does not leave an unprinted sliver at the edge. The required allowance depends on the product, scale and finishing method, so it should come from the output specification rather than from habit.
Important text and logos need a separate safe area inside the finished edge. Bleed protects the background; it does not protect critical content. Hemming, eyelets, pole pockets, panel joins and shaped cutting may all need their own clear zones. A banner edge that will be folded behaves differently from a rigid panel that will be trimmed flush.
At large scale, seams may be necessary because the finished graphic is wider than the printable media or easier to install in sections. Artwork should account for where those joins fall. Faces, small lettering and precise alignment points are poor places for an avoidable seam.
Colour space and predictable conversion
Screens emit light while print reflects it, so a display can show colours that ink on a particular media cannot reproduce. Converting artwork to a print-oriented colour space does not automatically make every bright screen colour printable. It describes colours in a way that can be interpreted by an output process.
The final appearance also depends on ink, media, surface finish and lighting. A colour on matte vinyl can feel different from the same values on gloss film or textile. Neutral greys and deep dark colours are especially sensitive to colour balance. Where a colour is important, a physical sample under relevant light is more informative than a bright monitor preview.
Embedded profiles help software understand the intended source colour. Mixing untagged files from different sources invites inconsistent conversions. The aim is not to force every element into one space as early as possible, but to keep the source meaning clear and allow a controlled conversion for the actual output condition.
A practical final-file check
Before export, confirm the document scale, finished dimensions, bleed, safe areas and panel plan. Check linked images at their effective output resolution and keep vector elements as vectors. Outline fonts only when the production workflow calls for it, and retain an editable master because outlined text is harder to correct.
Overprint settings, transparency and effects deserve a visual check in the exported file, not only in the working document. A print-ready PDF can still contain an unintended crop, missing link or hidden layer. Opening the exported file and inspecting it at full composition catches errors that a successful export message cannot.
